Lemon Drizzle Tea & Cakes

Updated 13th October 2022

As a cake enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for some nice cakes and came across Lemon Drizzle Tea & Cakes on twitter. They’re a market stall run by Charlotte Gee and Claire Simpson and they sell gorgeous cakes by the slice, individually wrapped. This appealed to my sweet tooth without the negatives of committing to an entire cake. I decided I had to try their slice of Earl Grey cake, made with tea from Saddleworth Tea, so spoke with them on twitter and they kindly reserved me a slice on the day I said I would be visiting!

I met up with both Charlotte and Claire at Levenshulme market as they recently started trading there. They are both very lovely ladies, Charlotte bakes all the cakes and Claire helps promotes them. I was happy to hear that Charlotte and I share the same ethos regarding cakes with frosting; no thank you! We can have a bit but a lot of modern cakes have way too much frosting which albeit can make a cake look pretty, is just not that nice to eat. All of Charlotte’s cakes are without heavy frosting and utterly divine.

The cakes

The cakes are £2 each or 3 for £5. With my Early Grey cake safely in hand, I proceeded to pick out 2 other slices with much difficulty. I ended up going with the ginger and orange cake and the coconut lime cake. When I got home, I sliced a section off each one and served with some black tea.

Coconut and lime cake

First the coconut and lime cake which I start with this since it seemed like the lightest tasting of the three cakes. The coconut sponge is very moist and the lime drizzle complements it perfectly with its sourness. The drizzle has fresh lime segments stirred into it. If you like lemon drizzle cakes and coconut, I highly recommend this cake.

Ginger and orange cake

The ginger and orange cake combines the flavours of ginger, cinnamon, treacle, golden syrup and orange zest, topped off with orange icing. The cake is very much like a Jamaican ginger cake, but with lovely orange added. It reminds me of Christmas! The sponge is very moist and rich tasting.

Earl Grey tea cake

This lovely tea cake contains fruit which has been soaked in Saddleworth Tea’s Earl Grey overnight. The sponge to this is drier than the other two cakes, so I highly recommend toasting this one with some butter.

I love ALL of the cakes from Lemon Drizzle Tea and Cakes, but the Lemon Drizzle is my favourite, followed by the vanilla flapjack in close second! They also creat excellent celebration cakes – our recent Victoria sponge christening cake was a massive hit and looked beautiful too.

I need to slowly go through their cake selection as I do want to try them all! I’ll have to give their flapjacks a go since I keep hearing good things about them!
