#AD / Goodlife Foods

Updated 10th January 2021

We all know that a healthy diet consists of plenty of vegetables. I usually have no problems as I quite love vegetables and salads, but even I can admit that on a cold day, that salad is just not very appetising. When Goodlife approached me to try out their range, I took their offer gratefully.

Here I will review, the mushroom and spinach kiev, the french bean and spinach sausages and their falafels.*

Goodlife are based in Warrington and work with farmers to create their range of vegetarian food. Their mission statement is to put vegetables in the spotlight, with no added preservatives, additives or colourings.

Mushroom and spinach kiev

The mushroom and spinach kiev were fairly nice but didn’t boast the oozy filling as seen on the box. Still, it was quite moist in the middle and you can taste the mushroom. I had wished there was more cheese or cream, but perhaps that would have defeated the purpose of a healthy meal. I served this with peas and sweet potato to demonstrate just how easy this meal could be, and all from the freezer!

Update: I set my oven to a slightly lower temperature second time round  and there was plenty of creamy garlic sauce this time round. The garlic was very pronounced, which I love, so I think I will be buying this one again!

If you want something more interesting, why not try Goodlife Food’s own video recipe for roasted cauliflower to serve with it.

French bean and spinach sausages

Next up we have the french bean and spinach sausages. I like it when vegetarian products are not trying to be a meat replacement and these sausages weren’t. I quite liked the texture of these, although that could be because I quite like french beans anyway. If they are not your thing, I recommend you stay away from these. Again, I served these with sweet potato and peas, but you could also try mixing it with a cream pasta as Goodlife’s video shows you.

Falafels

These falafels were a bit dry, perhaps I cooked them for too long in my air fryer? I served these with a moist couscous and some stir-fried kale. The falafels weren’t really flavoursome, I wish they had packed more cumin and other spices. Goodlife’s video recipe makes a tagine with these, which you could try. I should also note that these are gluten free.

Overall comments

I quite like how it is easy to see the ingredients and spot possible allergens (in bold) on the packaging.

The kiev is probably my favourite of the three. I like the ethos of the brand and I think if they add more spices, they can really shine in the frozen vegetarian food market. There can be a tendency to overcook these and make them too dry, so watch the food carefully and failing that, just add some sauce.

Have you tried Goodlife’s range yet? Would you be interested in trying them out?

* I was sent these boxes to try but this does not affect my opinion of the products.

Ah I had no idea they were so local! Brilliant incentive. We’re not a veggie household but have been trying to stick to a few meat-free days a week and the more products like this on the market certainly helps!

Yes, I agree that meat free days are a good thing. We should be trying to eat sustainably even if we are not vegetarians.

I’ve had the Parsnip and Carrot burgers with Cashews http://goodlife.co.uk/content/parsnip-and-carrot-nut-burgers-vegetarian-vegan/ and I really enjoyed them, stuffed into a warmed pitta bread with a little salad and a good dollop of tomato chutney. I was really curious about the Kiev, so thanks for reviewing them! I do eat meat but until we get frozen free range Chicken Kievs, I have to go without or make my own (messy!).

I’ve seen other people have more cheese/cream in theirs, so perhaps I got unlucky with my cooking method? I will try something else with the other one..

These sound really interesting. To stop the drying out I wonder if the sausages would be good in a pasta sauce 🙂 Shame about the Kiev!

They’re very handy to have in your freezer for those lazy days!
