Ulla Winbladh in Stockholm

Updated 4th June 2019

I went to Stockholm in October but I’m only just getting round to writing up about the places I ate at. If you are still interested in one of those places, read on!

After a long day walking around the Vasa Museum (I recommend visiting it!), we needed somewhere to eat. Meatballs were already on our agenda of things to eat, so a quick Google brought us to the nearby Ulla Winbladh.

The outside of this place is totally adorable and in the height of Summer, they put seating outside. It reminds me of a cottage from a fairy tale! We went in and asked for a table for 2. Nearly everyone in Stockholm has some fluency in English and this was no exception. If you’re going when it’s colder, don’t get caught out by the door man asking to take your coat. He charges you for putting them in a closet, and you can just as easily bring your coat with you inside the restaurant.

The Drinks

We felt like drinking something cool but not alcoholic so asked our waitress and she recommended the apple juice. Half expecting it to be some amazing thing, we ordered two glasses and they turned out.. just.. normal. Slightly disappointed. Maybe we should have ordered the Hallonsoda (a regional raspberry soda) instead…

We were given a bread basket with assorted bread whilst we waited for our mains, including the Nordic favourite, rye. We waited a fair bit for our mains to appear, and this might be because the restaurant was fairly busy.

The Mains

Meatballs with cream sauce

So meatballs were what we wanted and meatballs were what we got, or rather what my sister got. Don’t worry, we were sharing some of each other’s plates. The meatballs were so, so good and the mash was very creamy. The lingonberries are as fresh as they can get and the pickled cucumber offered a welcome break for your palate. There are plenty of meatballs and overall this dish is value for money.

Casserole of fish

I decided to order the casserole of fish based on someone else’s review for the place. These were nice but I do think the meatballs win in the battle of foods. That’s saying something as I really love fish. This was also quite substantial.

The Dessert

Feeling full after our mains, we decided that we would look at the menu and if there was anything that peaked out interest in the dessert side, we would get it. We came across the Oscar II cake, which is Sweden’s traditional almond cake. With it ordered, we waited too long for our dessert to arrive. You would have thought this would be the easiest thing to plate up. When it did arrive, we were rather disappointed with the size. This costs almost as much as a main but it was pitiful and the taste was not anything extraordinary.

OVERALL COMMENTS

Come for the meatballs but don’t get anything else. I heard the beers might be good, so give that a shot if so inclined.

I would love to go to stockhome and apparently they have lots of great vegan options there too.

I can believe it, we passed by many cafes with a variety of different foods!

Meatballs and lingonberries are the best combination! Thanks for sharing your review of this place, I would definitely be tempted to visit, just for those meatballs 🙂

It’s near the Vasa Museum and Skansen, both of which are really nice places to visit. You’d need a full day for either though!
