#AD / All Star Lanes [CLOSED]

There is a growing number of American diner and burger places in Manchester and it can be hard to pick which one to eat at. All Star Lanes is one such which not only serves American food but as the name suggests, they also have bowling lanes. With a friend, I try out what All Star Lanes has to offer. *

All Star Lanes are situated inside Great Northern Warehouse, which also houses the old AMC cinema, now the Odeon. This makes it a good stop if you wish to combine the two activities into one evening! The outside seating area is perfect for sunny days.

Towards the entrance is the bar area, so if you wish to just grab drinks you can. The interior pays tribute to American diners with dark wood and booth style seating. Combines with this are some lighter colours and Eames style chairs. The bowling lanes are located towards the back. There is also a private room you can rent out with two bowling lanes, perfect for private parties!

Virgin apple and elderflower

Virgin apple and elderflower, £4.50

I ordered the virgin apple and elderflower which also contains mint and lemon juice. The drink is quite sweet and syrupy; quite overwhelming on its own I found, but it compliments the food we ordered.

8oz Sirloin Steak

8oz Sirloin Steak, £18

28 day matured Dedham Vale steak, served with skinny fries, wild rocket, and roast vine tomatoes. We ordered our steak medium and medium it arrived. The accompaniments were all cooked well and there was plenty of peppercorn sauce.

The High Roller

The High Roller, £20

The High Roller burger is part of All Star Lane’s Summer menu. It contains a 6oz Wagyu beef patty, a chargrilled lobster tail, tiger shrimp skewer, coleslaw, rocket, and mayonnaise.  As with many burger places, this is all sandwiched between two brioche buns. I ate the shrimp skewer first before proceeding with the actual burger.

The buns aren’t the best the bread world has the offer, but as a means to eat the fillings inside, it works. The lobster tail was sizeable and the Wagyu beef was cooked medium to well done. I do have the admit that I couldn’t tell any difference between the Wagyu beef and standard beef patties. The combination I found of both types of meat I found to be odd, but I was never a huge fan or surf and turf combos. If you are a fan, this may be the burger for you. At £20 including a lobster tail, it’s not too bad price wise although certainly extravagant for a burger.

Reuben fries

Reuben fries, £6.50

Skinny fries loaded with our homemade Dedham Vale salt beef, smoked cheese sauce, ‘kimchikraut’, pickles and deli mustard. The Reuben fries are also part of the Summer menu and you get what you paid for. There are a lot of fries in one portion, so well worth sharing if you don’t want to waste food! The salt beef, pickles and mustard are a standard Reuben combo. Grab yourself a drink whilst you’re devouring this as you’ll need it due to high salt levels.

Salted Chocolate Fudge Brownies

Salted Chocolate Fudge Brownies, £5.50

I couldn’t leave without trying a dessert and as tempted as I was for the Spoilt For Choice dessert (salted chocolate fudge brownies, M&M cheesecake shot and a key lime pie shot), I knew what I really wanted was the brownies. Served warm with whipped cream on the side, these were truly decadent and one I would not hesitate to order again.

Overall rating and comments

7.5/10, -1 for the brioche buns, burger chains, can we one day do the bread that comes with the burger justice as well? -0.5 for my own inability to taste the benefit of eating Wagyu beef. -0.5 for the shrimp skewer, it’s a fun play on ingredients for the burger, but not really part of the burger as you essentially had to eat this separate from the rest. -0.5 for the Reuben fries, just a tad over salted for my liking but this would compliment a cold beverage so make sure you stock up.I like how there is a bowling alley inside, so you can combine dining with games for a fun night out. The staff was also extremely welcoming on my visit.

There are a few options for vegetarians, but vegans would struggle to eat anything other than plain fries and the tomato salad. Their chicken burgers appear to be halal also. There are also some gluten free and dairy free choices (hello steak!).

Would visit again?

If I wanted to combine a meal with bowling, this is certainly not a bad choice! I think I’ll stick with the steak next time though!
